Title

Addiction and the Good

Abstract

Rates of addiction remain high while models of addiction multiply and compete and translational results lag behind. It is time to rethink our understanding of what addiction is. Based on my recent book What Would You Do Alone in a Cage with Nothing but Cocaine? A Philosophy of Addiction, I will present the foundations for a new paradigm for addiction that marries science with ethics—embracing the heterogeneity of scientific explanations of addiction while recognizing that defining and treating addiction requires careful attention to the ethical ideal of a person’s own good.
